LCM Environmental | Bob Burnard
12 years of expansion and progress
In 1995 LCM were turning £750k per annum employing 10 people and had one major client, a facilities management company who organised fuel tank cleaning, removal of fuel tanks and demolition of old Shell filling stations.
LCM needed more clients so I undertook extensive marketing with my main focus on BP who had just acquired Mobil and I knew were in the market for site decommissioning.
During 1996 to 2003 we sold over £16 million of services to BP decommissioning over 300 filling stations.
In 2015 employing 63 staff we sold £5.2m of services to 255 clients.
The first half of 2016 was a record trading period with sales of £4m and gross margin at 33%.
Throughout my time at LCM I have used my skills to help build a successful company, originally Cornwall based, now recognised as an innovative nationwide market leader. I am immensely proud to leave behind a senior management team whom I have created and who inherit my business ethos by setting clear goals, monitoring, coaching and mentoring to ensure delivery of key performances in line with company targets.
Although hands on I have always had the ability to take a broader view of the company within its niche market, creating strategies to develop, expand and build on successes.
My analytical skills have helped me understand the finer points of financial performance using Excel to develop spreadsheets for costing major projects to ensure profitability, and management accounts to closely monitor overall company performance against set budgets and key performance indicators.
Throughout my time at LCM I have been involved with the demolition and remediation of over 700 garage sites, working with major clients, environmental consultants, waste disposal facilities, Health and Safety Executive, Trading Standards and Local Authorities, bringing together working knowledge of contaminated soils, civil engineering techniques, contractual risks, project financial and programming models, and quantity surveying.
With the onset of the financial turmoil in 2008 I had to quickly assess the company’s position, making tough decisions to restructure and secure the future of the company and its staff. Dealing with redundancies and successfully negotiating new terms with our bankers, invoice discounters, creditors and HMRC.
Due to the hazardous and dangerous nature of our business health and safety has always been paramount and formed the basis of LCM’s quality management system I introduced in 1997 whilst studying for my NEBOSH General Certificate.
LCM have won many health and safety awards from major clients such as BP, Total and Exxon Mobil. I am also immensely proud that under my leadership LCM never had a lost time injury.
After 12 years as managing director of a successful, innovative, nationwide company I now relish the opportunity to use my experiences and knowledge to coach and mentor local business owners and company directors to help enable them to make their own informed decisions.
